An MBOX file is an archive that stores a collection of emails. For instance, when you download your Gmail archive via Google Takeout, you'll receive an MBOX file with all your emails. Here's how you can view its contents. We performed the steps here with Mozilla Thunderbird version 128.5.0esr, which was the current version as of November 28, 2024.

On your computer, download Mozilla Thunderbird.

Run the downloaded file named Thunderbird Setup 128.5.0esr. Click Yes.

Click Next, Next, to continue and Finish. Thunderbird will launch automatically once the installation is complete.

Thunderbird will launch and prompt you to set up your existing email address. Enter your name, School email address, and password, then click Continue.

Note: For staff and full-time teachers, use the email format: userid@hkuspace.hku.hk.

You will be redirected to the school login page. Log in with your school account. Once you have successfully logged in, you will be prompted to grant permission to connect. Click Accept.

Choose IMAP and Click Done. You have now completed the setup to connect your school account on Thunderbird.

Install MOBX Import Tool

On your Thunderbird, click the top right menu icon, and click Add-ons and Themes.

In the Find more add-ons box, enter Import and click the search icon. It will lead you to the addon page.

Click the green Add to Thunderbird button next to “ImportExportTools NG".

Click Add on the pop-up window. The MBOX Import tool will now be added to Thunderbird. You are now ready to proceed to the next section to import your emails from .mbox files.

Next, you'll import your HKU SPACE's Google emails (in .MBOX format) from your Google Takeout export into a local Thunderbird folder on your computer's hard drive. Please refer to this guide to learn how to export your emails from Google.

In the Mail tab of Thunderbird, right-click on Local Folders, hover over ImportExportTools NG, then hover over Import mbox Files, and click on Individual mbox Files.
在 Thunderbird 的郵件標籤中，右鍵點擊「本地資料夾」，然後將滑鼠懸停在「ImportExportTools NG」上，再懸停在「Import mbox Files」上，最後點擊「Individual mbox Files」。

Navigate to the folder where your Google Takeout .MBOX files are stored, select the files you want to import, and click Open. The contents of your .MBOX files will then be imported into Thunderbird.

Your emails from the .mbox file have now been imported. You can find them under Local Folders.
